🏭 Manufacturer & history
Although many people recognize the slogan “Ik wil Bolletje,” the Rotterdam-based Hooimeijer family played an important role in the popularity of rusks in the Netherlands.
What once started as durable ship food gradually became a common breakfast product thanks to entrepreneurial bakers.
Arie Hooimeijer began as a baker in Rotterdam. When a local grocer asked him to bake 10,000 rusks, it marked the beginning of a success story. Recognizing the potential, he started supplying packaged rusks to multiple shops and expanded his bakery into a factory.
In 1934 a modern mechanical rusk factory opened in Barendrecht, where at peak production as many as 65,000 rusks per hour were produced.
