About this Fabeltjeskrant hand puppet – Mr. Owl:
Mr. Owl is the stately character who narrates the stories of De Fabeltjeskrant. He reads the news from the Great Animal Forest, linking the various scenes together, often in a somewhat long-winded and forgetful manner. Famous phrases include “Good day, dear TV children” and “Eyes closed and beaks shut.” His real name is Jacob, but he is almost never addressed by it and usually does not actively participate in the events in the forest.

Mr. Owl was originally designed by visual artist Marie Troost, inspired by a stately eagle owl in Artis Zoo. Instead of natural colors, she deliberately chose blue and yellow, which worked better on film. The character is based on Jan Straaijer, an acquaintance of the writer Leen Valkenier. In the series, his voice was performed by Frans van Dusschoten.

In August 2010, Albert Heijn, together with SaraLee, launched a promotional campaign around De Fabeltjeskrant. By purchasing two promotional products and paying a small surcharge, customers could obtain one of the exclusive hand puppets. A total of 600,000 puppets were produced in China, featuring seven different characters: Mr. Owl, Miss Stork, Bor the Wolf, Gerrit the Pigeon, Zoef the Hare, Mr. Raven, and Willem Beaver.
