About this Fabeltjeskrant hand puppet – Gerrit the Pigeon:
Gerrit the Pigeon is the charming mail carrier of the Great Animal Forest, who behaves entirely like a human. After permanently injuring his leg, he opened his own post office (the “post-and-pigeon office”), built by the Beaver Brothers. He occasionally tells tales about his former success in pigeon racing, though these are usually cut short by the other animals. Gerrit wears a hearing aid that doesn’t always work properly and speaks with an Amsterdam accent.

The character’s voice in the series was performed by Ger Smit. Gerrit also won the singing contest Het Landjuweel and is remembered for his humorous references to “Counter 3” at the post office. In the second series, his post office was modernized with solar panels and a “long-distance writer” (telex machine).

By purchasing two promotional products and paying a small surcharge, customers could obtain one of the exclusive hand puppets. A total of 600,000 puppets were produced in China, featuring seven different characters: Mr. Owl, Miss Stork, Bor the Wolf, Gerrit the Pigeon, Zoef the Hare, Mr. Raven, and Willem Beaver.
