🏭 Manufacturer & history

Verkade is one of the best-known Dutch brands for biscuits, chocolate and crispbread. The company was founded on 2 May 1886 by Ericus Gerhardus Verkade, who started his Steam Bread and Rusk Factory “De Ruyter” in West-Zaandam.

The name referred to an old flour mill in the same town. Early products included bread, rusks and gingerbread. Over time, Verkade grew into one of the largest Dutch producers of biscuits and chocolate, with the recognizable “De Ruyter” logo still referring to this origin.
