The Rise and Fall of VéGé: A Glimpse into the Dutch Grocery World

VéGé: VErkoop GEmeenschap - a name that sounds familiar to many, and a once-prominent player in the Dutch grocery landscape. Founded in 1938 by passionate wholesaler Theo Albada Jelgersma from Breda, this nationwide organization quickly grew into a network of independent grocers.

Alongside other well-known voluntary branch companies like De Spar, Centra, Sperwer Groep, and ViVo, VéGé flourished in the years before World War II. By 1939, there were as many as 2,400 stores affiliated with this prosperous organization. VéGé continued its success after the war, even extending its influence beyond the borders of the Netherlands. In 1961, VéGé boasted a staggering 28,900 affiliated grocers spread across ten countries.

However, the glory days of VéGé came to an end in the early 1980s. Alongside ViVo, the VéGé stores were acquired by Unigro, and they continued under the names Super and Cirkel. This takeover marked the demise of the once-proud VErkoop GEmeenschap and signalled the end of an era in the Dutch grocery industry.

While VéGé no longer exists in its original form today, its legacy lives on in the memories of those who witnessed the heyday of this organization. The story of VéGé serves as a reminder of the dynamic nature of retail and the ongoing evolution of the supermarket sector in the Netherlands.
