Douwe Egberts (D.E.): A Rich History of Enjoyment

The captivating history of Douwe Egberts traces its origins back to the year 1753 when Egbert Douwes and his wife Akke Thysses opened the doors of their "grocery store" in the picturesque town of Joure. They embarked on this adventure after relocating from the humble village of Idskenhuizen. In this remarkable store, named Douwe Egberts, they cherished a treasure trove of products that enriched everyday life, from groceries to chocolate and dried fruits.

In 1780, they passed the torch to their son, Douwe Egberts, and his wife Ymke Jacobs Visser. This name still proudly graces the company to this day. Under their skilful leadership, Douwe Egberts specialized in processing and blending coffee, tea, and tobacco.

Douwe Egberts not only carried forward the store's name but also the dream of expansion beyond Joure. In his time, the company grew beyond the city limits, making Douwe Egberts not only the namesake but also the founder of the company's expansion. After Douwe Egberts' passing in 1806, his second wife, Lysbeth Mintjes, took the helm.

In 1919, Douwe Egberts opened a second location in Utrecht, chosen for its strategically central location in the Netherlands. Ten years later, the location outgrew its space, resulting in a move within the city, from Catharijnekade to Merwedekade, where the company remains to this day.

Douwe Egberts also played a role in nature conservation by initiating the planting of the Haulsterbossen. These trees took root in the late 1940s and served as a valuable resource for matchstick production.

After World War II, Douwe Egberts embarked on its international adventure by opening branches in countries such as France, Spain, Denmark, and from 1948, in Belgium as well. With high-quality products and continuous growth, Douwe Egberts has evolved into a prominent name in the coffee industry, both nationally and internationally.

The legacy of Douwe Egberts is one of dedication to pleasure and craftsmanship, which began in a small store in Joure and expanded into a global influence in the world of coffee and tea. The passion for quality and the ambition to keep growing has helped Douwe Egberts secure its place as an icon in the realm of flavour experiences. The name Douwe Egberts symbolizes more than two centuries of delightful moments shared with people worldwide, and it remains a source of pleasure and inspiration for the future.
