Quality Street is the brand name of a range of candies in the shape of bonbons.
Quality Street was created in 1936 by Mackintosh's firm and named after James Barrie's play of the same name, which was then filmed. Quality Street is currently distributed by Nestlé.
Quality Street is available in round tin drums and rectangular cardboard boxes. The tins often feature an image of two characters from the play. The main color is always purple.
Mackintosh was a British pastry shop best known for Mackintosh's Toffee and brands such as Quality Street and Rolo.
The company was founded by John Mackintosh (1868-1920) and his wife Violet (née Taylor), who bought a pastry shop in Halifax with their combined savings of £ 100 in 1890, the year they married. Violet, who was a pastry chef before her marriage, ran the shop and her husband continued to work in a cotton spinning mill. To attract customers, they decided to sell a special toffee. Violet developed a recipe that mixed the traditional brittle English butterscotch with soft American caramel, and they sold the toffee as Mackintosh's Celebrated Toffee. The toffee's success enabled Mackintosh to expand the business outside Halifax by 1894. In fact, it was so successful that it "eventually changed the popular understanding of the term 'toffee,' previously describing any sugared or boiled sweet candy."
Mackintosh's went on to develop brands such as Quality Street (1936), Rolo (1938), Caramac (1959) and Toffee Crisp (1963).
In 1969 the company merged with Rowntree's to form Rowntree Mackintosh Confectionery, which itself was acquired by Nestlé in 1988.
