Who is Bartje?

Bartje Bartels is the main character in the books by Anne de Vries. He grows up in a poor farming family in Drenthe and rebels against the fate laid out for him. His most famous quote is:
"I don’t pray for brown beans."

The book was published in 1935 and became a classic. The sequel Bartje Seeks Happiness followed later. The stories were adapted into a TV series in 1972 by Willy van Hemert, with dialogues in the Drenthe dialect and Dutch subtitles.

International success
The books have been translated into German, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Danish, Czech, Hungarian, and more.
