Background on Verkade:
Verkade was founded on May 2, 1886, by Ericus Gerhardus Verkade under the name “De Ruyter,” named after a historic flour mill in West Zaandam. Initially, the company produced bread, rusk, and gingerbread. Later, the product range expanded to include biscuits, chocolate, and even tealight candles. The name “De Ruyter” lives on in the brand’s logo, which remains recognizable to this day.
This biscuit tin serves as a tangible reminder of a time when design and brand identity were closely intertwined. For collectors and enthusiasts of Dutch design from the 1960s, it is an interesting and functional item with historical value.
