  • Manufacturer: Van der Meulen, Hallum
  • Production Period: 1964 – 1989

Product Description:
This metal biscuit tin was produced by Van der Meulen in Hallum and is part of a series of three tins designed for biscuit packaging. It features illustrations of traditional Frisian sports—specifically belslydjeien (horse-drawn sleigh racing) and kaatsen (Frisian handball). The series was manufactured between 1964 and 1989.

With a height of 22.5 cm and a diameter of 10.5 cm, this cylindrical tin is both practical and visually striking. The decorative illustrations reflect Frisian folk culture, making it an appealing item for collectors of regional heritage or lovers of nostalgic packaging.

Frisian Sports Illustrated:

Belslydjeien is a traditional sport from Friesland where an elegantly carved sleigh, known as an arretikker, is pulled over a snowy course by a Friesian horse. The sport emphasizes speed, precision, and craftsmanship.

Kaatsen is an ancient handball game in which players strike the ball with the flat of their hand. Although versions of this sport are played around the world, in Friesland it is deeply rooted in local tradition with its own rules and organized competitions.

Condition and Signs of Use:
This biscuit tin is in good vintage condition with minor signs of use and age-related wear consistent with its age. The original illustrations are well preserved. Detailed photos provide a complete view of the item’s condition.

Historical Context:
Van der Meulen began as an artisanal biscuit bakery in 1910 in Ferwerd. Due to increasing demand, the company relocated to Hallum, where a purpose-built bakery was established under the name De Volharding. Today, Van der Meulen is a modern company with international reach, focused on producing biscuits, rye bread, and Melba toast.

This tin is not only a functional storage container but also a tangible piece of cultural heritage from the north of the Netherlands. A beautiful and useful object that tells the story of Friesland and its traditions.
