The Elfstedentocht (Frisian: Alvestêdetocht) is an almost 200 kilometer long skating tour on natural ice organized by the Koninklijke Vereniging De Friesche Eleven Cities. Because of the distance and because of the heroic character, the Elfstedentocht is also called "The Tour of Tours". Leeuwarden, the capital of Friesland, has traditionally been the starting and finishing point.

Pole vault, better known by its Frisian name fierljeppen, is a sport in which an athlete tries to bridge the greatest possible distance across a ditch using a pole. It is a traditional Frisian sport. The meaning of fierljeppen is to jump far (from fier, "far" and ljeppe, an archaic word for "to jump", which is related to the English to leap and the Dutch to walk).

Races with horse-drawn carriages and sleighs: Is it to cover a certain distance through the snow with a horse-drawn sleigh as quickly as possible. This is mainly done in the north of the country and especially in Friesland where it is called belslydjeien.

Kaatsen is a ball sport in which the ball is hit with the palm of the hand. It is now practiced in various variations under different names around the world. It can be played between teams ranging from one to nine people. The game technique is aimed at hitting the ball with the palm of the hand in such a way that the opposing team cannot hit it back legally.

Ring steken is a folkloric tradition in which people, seated on horseback or from a carriage, try to put a lance through a ring. This tradition, which is practiced as a sport in some regions, occurs in parts of the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark.

Skûtsjesilen are the Frisian sailing competitions with skûtsjes. Competitions with skûtsjes were already organized in the nineteenth century, as in 1820 in Sneek. A skûtsje (Frisian for 'boat') is a wooden or steel Frisian tjalk built for the transport of freight in Friesland.

History of Van der Meulen Master Bakers
In 1910 Hessel van der Meulen founded a small traditional biscuit bakery in Ferwerd. The high quality quickly became a household name in the north of the country. The demand for Van der Meulen Rusk continues to grow strongly and expansion is soon necessary. The company moves to Hallum, where a large bakery, specially equipped for Rusk, is being built under the name "De Volharding".

In 1930 the 2nd generation started exporting rusk to America under the motto: "the more you eat the more you want!"

Hessel van der Meulen junior, the 3rd generation, takes over the helm in the 1960s. A new period of growth is dawning. The beginning of the seventies is dominated by the introduction of Melba Toast and the first real set-up of export to England.

In 1985 the Rusk and Melba Toast range is expanded with Rye bread thanks to the takeover of a rye bread bakery in Broeksterwoude. Exports have then become an important source of income.

In the early nineties our current general manager Johannes van der Meulen takes over the management. In 1997 it is decided to return to the core;
producing Rusk, Rye Bread and Melba Toast. Van der Meulen de Meesterbakkers is now an international company with approximately 120 employees.
