Douwe Egberts, founded in 1753 by Egbert Douwes and his wife Akke Thijsses, began as a grocery store named "De Witte Os" in Joure. Here, they laid the foundation for the well-known brands Douwe Egberts and Pickwick, with coffee, tea, and tobacco as their main products.

Pickwick tea, introduced in 1937, got its name from the wife of the then-director, inspired by the works of Dickens, particularly the 'Pickwick Papers.' The quest for an English name reflected the English association with tea at that time, complete with an image of an English stagecoach on the wooden crates.
