Douwe Egberts (DE), a Dutch company specializing in the processing and trade of coffee, tea, and other food products, has a rich history dating back to 1753.

The story of Douwe Egberts began when Egbert Douwes and his wife Akke Thysses moved from their hometown of Idskenhuizen to the nearby town of Joure. On March 11, 1753, they opened a store specializing in "colonial goods." In addition to groceries, chocolate, and dried fruits, they also offered items that enhanced daily life.

In 1780, Egbert Douwes and his wife Ymke Jacobs Visser handed over the business to their son Douwe Egberts (1755-1806), whose name the company still bears to this day. Douwe Egberts focused on processing and blending coffee, tea, and tobacco.

Under the leadership of Douwe Egberts, the company expanded beyond the borders of Joure. He not only gave his name to the company but also drove its expansion. After Egberts' passing in 1806, his second wife, Lysbeth Mintjes, continued running the business.

Douwe Egberts also played a significant role in the establishment of the Haulsterbossen forest.

After World War II, Douwe Egberts embarked on international expansion by opening branches in France, Spain, and Denmark. From 1948, the company also operated in Belgium. These steps propelled Douwe Egberts to gain worldwide recognition and become a leading brand.
