Fisher-Price was founded in 1930 by Herman Fisher, Helen Schelle, Irving Price and his wife Margaret Evans Price. The name was created by combining two of the founders' three surnames. Fisher had previously gained experience in the production and sale of games, while Schelle had owned her own toy store.

The first toys were made of sturdy metal and wood from the yellow pine, which therefore hardly splintered. From almost the beginning, sales were good. From the early 1950s, Fisher-Price began producing plastic toys. A new toy line was launched in the following decade. With the Play Family, today known as Little People, Fisher-Price would grow into a globally recognized brand.

Herman Fisher retired in 1969 at the age of 71 as the last founder. Quaker Oats Company purchased the company that same year. Fisher-Price went public in 1991, but came into the hands of Mattel in 1993 and with that also disappeared from the stock exchange.

Since its inception, Fisher-Price has released approximately 5,000 different toys.
