Description
Round cylindrical tin can for rusk from Hooimeijer. This tin is equipped with a loose lid and has a seamed longitudinal seam at the back. The decoration of this tin consists of a light yellow background with details in orange, red and blue. The beach is richly decorated with, among other things, butterflies, cornflowers and ears of corn. Provided with the text: "purifies what lasts".

Arie Hooimeijer was a baker in South Rotterdam and had a keen eye for entrepreneurship. At the beginning of the last century he was asked by a local grocer to bake 10,000 rusks. That became his first challenge, then he started thinking that he could deliver packaged rusks to several grocers. In this way he became a factory baker from a simple baker. First a small factory in Rotterdam South, then in 1934 a machine rusk factory in Barendrecht.

Hooimeijer
It is the Barendrecht rusk manufacturer Hooimeijer who made the rusk big in the Netherlands. Thanks to him, dry food has grown from marine food to a regular item on the breakfast table.

Started as a simple baker, Arie Hooimeijer builds his first factory in Rotterdam South around 1900. In 1934, he moves his company to Barendrecht. The rusk factory is a real family business: the father focuses on production (and comes up with the unbreakable rusk roll in 1957), while son Joost turns out to be a handy marketing boy. Already in the 1940s he came up with promotions with savings albums. Especially the album with saving pictures of ocean giants is very popular and ensures that a lot of rusk is eaten.

Last century, Hooimeijer rusk became a broad concept. In its heyday, 65,000 rusks were baked per hour in the Hooimeijer rusk factory in Barendrecht.
