Each of the four sides is designed as a decorative tile panel featuring a different traditional Dutch scene:
• Coastal landscape with harbour, figures and buildings
• Boat with figures and cattle along the riverbank
• Boy in traditional Dutch costume with Kwatta cocoa
• Girl in traditional Dutch costume with a Kwatta product
The lid depicts a helmsman at a ship's wheel, surrounded by small Dutch scenes. The tin features inscriptions in several languages, including “Kwatta’s Olanda Cacao”, “Kwatta’s Dutch Cocoa” and markings indicating its original 1-kilogram contents.
🏭 Kwatta & history
Kwatta was founded in 1883 by P. de Bondt and J.G. van Emden. The company name refers to the Kwatta cocoa plantation in Suriname, which was connected to the Van Emden family. Breda later developed into an important production centre for the brand.
The Kwatta name became so familiar that “kwatta” was even used regionally as a general term for chocolate.
