Each player moves a horse around the colourful racecourse. The roll of the die determines how many spaces the horse advances. Red spaces play a role at the obstacles: if an obstacle is not successfully cleared, the horse must move back.
Before the race begins, players can place bets on the horses. According to the original rules, the stakes are ultimately divided among the first three horses to finish.
