🛠 About This Product

This classic tobacco tin features a striking red background with white labels, black lettering, and the distinctive eight-pointed red star that became synonymous with the Roode-Ster brand. The front bears the inscription:

"Lichte Geurige Rooktabak – ROODE STER – 1/4 kilo – N.V. Stoomtabaksfabriek 'Het Wapen van Rotterdam' v/h Theodorus Niemeijer Groningen."

The underside is finished with a rolled edge and a raised base, construction details typical of high-quality Dutch tin manufacturing during the first half of the twentieth century. Originally intended to store a quarter kilogram of loose-cut pipe tobacco, this tin is now highly appreciated as a decorative display piece or collectible.

🏭 Manufacturer & History

The history of Niemeijer began on 25 March 1819, when Meindert Niemeijer established a business in colonial goods in Groningen, the Netherlands. Alongside coffee, tea, and tobacco, the company soon developed its own line of smoking tobaccos marketed under the name "Het Wapen van Rotterdam."

Under the leadership of Theodorus Niemeijer, the company expanded significantly. In addition to its own brands, Niemeijer also manufactured tobacco products for other businesses. During the economic depression of the 1930s, cigarette production was discontinued, and the company shifted its focus toward coffee and tea. Throughout the Second World War, Niemeijer continued operating by producing coffee and tea substitutes under the Savora brand.

During the twentieth century, Niemeijer became one of the Netherlands' leading tobacco manufacturers, acquiring several competitors based in Groningen. Increasing competition from companies such as Douwe Egberts eventually led to the discontinuation of its coffee and tea operations during the 1960s, allowing the company to concentrate entirely on tobacco products.
