🛠 About This Product

Before milk, yoghurt, and custard were sold in cartons, they were commonly supplied in reusable glass bottles. To make sure every last drop could be used, the bottle was placed upside down in this Tomado bottle drainer with a small bowl underneath. Gravity allowed the remaining contents to drain neatly from the bottle without spills.

The bottle drainer was often used alongside a bottle scraper, but this rack provided a cleaner and more convenient solution. Today, it has become a sought-after collector's item and a charming decorative piece for a retro, vintage, mid-century, or country-style kitchen.

🏭 Manufacturer & History

Tomado, short for Van der Togt Massa Artikelen Dordrecht, was founded in 1923 by the Van der Togt brothers in the Netherlands. What began in the attic of their family home producing simple wallpaper hooks grew into one of the country's most iconic manufacturers of household goods.

A well-known company anecdote tells that the brothers' mother jokingly said Tomado stood for "TOB MAar DOor" ("Keep persevering"), referring to their determination during the difficult early years.

After receiving a commission from the Dutch Housewives' Association to develop a metal dish-drying rack, the company expanded rapidly. During the 1950s, Tomado became a symbol of the modern Dutch household. Its colourful plastic-coated wire products were found in countless homes. The company's success came to an end in the early 1970s, when competition from inexpensive imported household goods eventually led to its bankruptcy.
