Retro and Vintage – What’s the Difference?

Curious about the difference between retro and vintage?
The terms are often used interchangeably, but there is a real difference. In this blog, we explain what these styles mean to us, how they relate to each other, and why our webshop is called Retro & Design—even though we mainly sell vintage pieces.

Welcome to Retro & Design!

You may have wondered: what’s the difference between retro and vintage? It’s an understandable question, as the terms are often mixed up—both in everyday speech and online. At Retro & Design, we mainly sell vintage items, but we deliberately chose the name Retro & Design. In this article, we’ll explain what we mean by each term, so you’ll know exactly what to expect when you visit our store.

What does “retro” mean?

The word retro usually refers to products or styles inspired by, or borrowing from, the fashion, design, or culture of the 20th century—often with a modern twist. These are typically newly made or recently produced items that evoke a sense of nostalgia, such as furniture or accessories with a 1970s, 1980s, or 1990s look. Retro celebrates designs from the recent past, often with a playful or trendy edge.

What does “vintage” mean?

Vintage literally means “year of harvest” and refers to genuine, older items that actually come from a specific era. The term originates from the wine industry, where the harvest year determines a wine’s uniqueness. In a similar way, vintage items capture the essence of their time, giving them historical value and charm.

In general, vintage items are at least 20 to 30 years old. They often bring back memories or have a story to tell. People value them for their quality, character, and unique appearance. Internationally, the term vintage is most commonly associated with clothing, but at Retro & Design, we use it mainly for home décor and distinctive collectibles from the past.

Why are the terms often confused?

In everyday use—especially online—retro and vintage are frequently mixed up. Sometimes people call older items “retro” when they’re actually vintage. In other countries, vintage is often used only for clothing. So it’s no surprise that the distinction can be unclear.

Why did we choose the name Retro & Design?

We picked the name Retro & Design to highlight our passion for design from different eras of the 20th century. Our collection is carefully curated: authentic vintage pieces, as well as retro items that revive the charm of the past with a modern twist.

We’re also a modern webshop, bringing these special items from the past back into today’s homes—blending the best of both worlds.

How can you tell the difference in our shop?

At Retro & Design, you’ll mostly find vintage items—authentic pieces with real history. Think classic 1950s, 60s, and 70s design, West German ceramics from the 60s, or Tupperware from the 70s. Occasionally, you’ll see retro items, such as a newly made tin inspired by 1980s design. The difference can be subtle, but we describe every product clearly so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Caring for vintage and retro items

Vintage pieces often need a little extra care. Because they’re older, they may show small signs of wear or be made from materials that require special attention. We always recommend handling vintage décor with care, and where possible, we provide maintenance tips. This way, your purchase will remain beautiful—and sustainable—for years to come.
