🏭 Manufacturer & history
Pickwick is the tea brand of Douwe Egberts and was introduced in 1937. The name was inspired by the book The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club by the English writer Charles Dickens.
Douwe Egberts was founded in 1753 in Joure by Egbert Douwes and his wife Akke Thysses. Their shop sold colonial goods such as coffee, tea and spices — products that were considered small everyday luxuries at the time.
When their son Douwe Egberts took over the business in 1780, the company developed into a brand strongly focused on coffee, tea and tobacco. After World War II the company experienced a period of strong growth and international expansion.
